The US Navy method has an error range of ±3-4% body fat compared to DEXA scans (gold standard). It is one of the most accurate methods available without specialized equipment, and significantly more accurate than BMI-based estimates.
Waist: at the navel for men, at the narrowest point for women. Neck: just below the larynx (Adam's apple). Hips (women only): at the widest point around the buttocks. Stand straight and measure at the end of a normal exhale.
For men: Essential fat 2-5%, Athletes 6-13%, Fit 14-17%, Average 18-24%, Obese 25%+. For women: Essential fat 10-13%, Athletes 14-20%, Fit 21-24%, Average 25-31%, Obese 32%+.
