Frequently asked
questions
According to the American Heart Association, normal blood pressure is less than 120/80 mmHg. Readings between 120–129 systolic (with diastolic below 80) are "elevated." Stage 1 hypertension is 130–139/80–89 mmHg.
The top number (systolic) measures the pressure in your arteries when your heart beats. The bottom number (diastolic) measures the pressure between beats. Blood pressure is written as systolic/diastolic (e.g., 120/80 mmHg).
Measure in the morning before taking medication or eating, and again in the evening. Sit quietly for 5 minutes before measuring. Avoid caffeine, exercise, and smoking for 30 minutes before readings.
